Railway work is linear, long and difficult to access, which is exactly where drones outperform ground survey. A single corridor flight produces a continuous orthomosaic and terrain model across tens of kilometres, instead of a chain of disconnected chainage surveys. We map new alignments for feasibility and detailed design, inspect bridges, culverts, tunnels portals and overhead equipment without occupying the track, and fly repeat missions during construction so progress claims are backed by dated imagery. Frequently Asked Questions

Can you survey a railway corridor without stopping trains?

Yes. Corridor mapping and most structure inspection is flown from outside the track envelope at a safe height, so normal operations continue. Only work requiring very close approach to live overhead equipment needs coordination with the operating authority, and that is planned in advance.

How many kilometres of corridor can you cover per day?

For mapping at typical design-survey resolution, 15–40 route-kilometres per day is realistic depending on corridor width, terrain and permissions. BVLOS approval significantly increases that figure by removing the need to reposition the crew every few kilometres.

What accuracy do you achieve for alignment design?

With RTK/PPK and ground control at regular intervals along the corridor, horizontal accuracy is typically 2–3 cm and vertical 3–5 cm, which is adequate for preliminary and most detailed design work. Where design tolerance is tighter, we supplement with conventional survey at critical points rather than overstating what photogrammetry delivers.

Do railway sites need special flight permissions?

Railway land is not automatically restricted, but many corridors pass near airports, defence installations or other no-drone zones that do. We check the route against Digital Sky airspace zoning during planning and obtain the necessary clearances before mobilising.
